technology makes life simpler: not!

I got myself an iPad mini the other day. Yay for me! Isn’t it exciting to get a new gadget, to have that rush of coolness added to a pointless-feeling-of-accomplishment-of-sorts?! The good thing is that it lasts for about a week at the most. And the bad thing is, that it lasts for a week at the most.

During this time, you are overzealously glowing with the thought of having bought a marvel of modern technology that has made your life so much easier, and of course, better! After this honeymoon period is over, however, you realize that what you have signed-up-for is another piece of furniture to charge, an added chore. Not to mention, the extended stupidity of buying accessories and apps. And then again, you travel with even more stuff than ever before; and of course, your bag was never really meant for one more of anything. Go figure!

I also bought a phone holding stand for the car, this week. You know, those that cling to your glass on the principle of vacuum. This makes it easier for me to view my caller while driving, and to follow directions on Google Maps, for example. However, this is of value for perhaps 10-15% of my travel. For the rest 85%, I am getting late while I put-in and take-out my phone from the damn thing–apart from turning-on Bluetooth on the phone, and turning-on the Bluetooth device, and then charging the two of them by taking out the charging lines for my iPad and iPhone and the soon-to-come-iPod! [I thinks that soon enoughs, I go iMads!] So, as you can clearly see, I am now starting to question the rationale behind my rationale to buy this stand.

So, coming back to these Apple devices of mine. They are beautiful efficient devices, no two ways about it. But somewhere down the line, like a bunch of proud frat kids, they decided to talk only amongst themselves, and to nobody else that existed around! They also require a different variety of proprietary charging pin for each one of them. This means that, at home, I now have a spike guard just for charging purposes. And there we were, thinking as we moved from PC to laptops [to smaller and smaller, more powerful devices] that gone are the days of plugging 5 wires into that god-forsaken thing!

And then, there’s Murphy’s law which dictates that the particular mobile device critical to your requirement will die at the very moment that you need it. And as an addendum, you shall have a charger for everything else on earth, but this particular device!

Clearly, technology makes life simpler.

10.02.2012 / nerul

Almond Blossoms - Vincent van Gogh

a pretty little girl
grew up
in a house full of
roses
and lillies
and flora galore

with her eyes bright
she would enjoy with delight
those colours and forms–
oh, their beautiful sight!

however
all the same,
not the same
one could claim
of how
of their nectar and scent
she would opine

and so of it
she made a habit
–a habit
that
with her,
would delicately grow
–a habit
that she bore
in choosing all her things–
be they
clothes
shoes
or
human beings

people
would point-out,
they would
look down-upon and despise,
they would say
it wasn’t wise

they even tried
making him understand
that
it had come to be hers
and she
[had come to be] his–
vice

still–
for ages,
he waited
and
he still waits along
he probably will
wait more–for periods
just as long

for
he believes
that
her innocence lies
in that very sight–
the sight that sees
the form as being the sight!

it is this
very ‘vice’
that gives him
endless hope
and
it is this what makes
his eyes
shiny and bright

for ‘if she could adore it so much
–he says–
for what it looks like,
i presume,
just imagine
how wonderful
would it be,
to look
into her eyes,
when she sees it all…
for what it really is;
oh
wouldn’t that be
a marvellous
break of night ?!!

and for that moment
it is worth waiting
living till that moment
or waiting
and withering
in its
(lifesaving) anticipation!’
